thinking-statueHow powerful is the magic of believing? Before 1954, no one had run a four-minute mile. Roger Bannister changed all that with his thinking, first and foremost. He said, “Fueled by my faith in my training, I will overcome all obstacles. I am brave! I am not afraid to face anyone on the track. I believe this is not a dream. It is my reality.”

What’s strange is that his record was broken 46 days later, and within two years, nine sub-four-minute miles gained the same fame. It seems astounding that we could go through history without ever cracking the mile in four minutes and then all of a sudden 9 athletes succeed at it within two years of Bannister’s record-breaking time. How on earth could that be? (more…)

How To Meditate Like A Zen Monk For Overall Health and Well Being

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Mediation has enormous benefits.  Studies of meditation have proven to greatly reduce stress, improve health as well as control negative thoughts.meditation

In a report by “Psychology Today“  Neuroscientists have found that meditators shift their brain activity to different areas of the cortex-brain waves in the stress-prone right frontal cortex move to the calmer left frontal cortex. In other words, they were calmer and happier than before.

Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, recorded the brain waves of stressed-out employees of a high-tech firm in Madison, Wisconsin. The subjects were split randomly into two groups, 25 people were asked to learn meditation over eight weeks, and the remaining 16 were left alone as a control group. (more…)

For without taking that risk, that chance, how would we achieve any success? We can truthfully say, then, that success is predicated on failure, i.e., that failure is a necessary condition for success to occur. Pure and simple. (more…)

The Power of Silence

Don't TellWe live in a society marked by the noxious effects of pollution - of the air we breathe, the lakes and rivers we swim in, our very soil… And let’s not forget that constant barrage of sounds around us: intermittent, constant, ultra-loud, etc. Our environment is getting increasingly noisier by the day, to the point where some are willing to actually pay for quietness.

Do you ever feel you just want a break from all the ambient noise around you - phones ringing you up at work and home, on your cell, people chatter, traffic rushing by your home? How is all this noise affecting you? (more…)

How to Help Reduce The Sting Out of Emotional Pain

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

gratitudeI watched the post Super Bowl 43 interviews of the Arizona Cardinals loss with great interest.  It was interesting to see how the players reacted to a very emotional loss.  I knew losing a big game like that was probably very heartbreaking and emotionally draining.  I wanted to see how they would react.  Would they be angry, upset, bitter, conciliatory or something else?

I’ve seen players and coaches interviewed in the past after games and I’ve witnessed some of them become angry and distraught.  I’ve seen them go into a tirade.  Studies have shown this attitude can be very unhealthy on the mind and body. (more…)
