Some forms of meditation advocate the use of meditation mantras. In mantra meditation, you repeat a word or a phrase to yourself again and again in order to achieve a specific result. The mantra that you use is meant to represent the quality that you wish to infuse into your consciousness through mantra meditation. Mantra meditation may include things like positive affirmation, the name of God, or other mantras designed to achieve the desired result. Not sure what meditation mantra to use?

What’s in a Mantra?

When you practice mantra meditation, the mantra is an extremely important element. It represents what you are aiming to infuse yourself with through the exercise of this type of meditation. Many people use mantras in their daily lives without even realizing it. For example, something like: “I am not very beautiful; nobody loves me” is a negative mantra. By changing this mantra to something like: “I am beautiful; I love myself,” the individual can begin to see a betterment of her life. The mantras we tell ourselves every day are just as important as the mantras we use when meditating, so analyze your mantra and make sure it embodies a message you want to internalize.

Mantras for Meditation

Deep, long, single-sound vibrations are the most popular mantras, as they are most useful for deep concentration and transcendental meditation.

Om or Aum

Om, aum and ang are some of the most popular mantras in use around the world because of their usefulness in deep concentration and trance meditation. Om is a shortening of the Name of God, or a similar Buddhist mantra.                

The Name of God

The name of god in the feminine form is Om Namaha Shivai, and in the masculine is Om Namaha Shivaiya. It’s a popular mantra in Southern India, and is used as an invocation and prayer to the Hindu God Shiva.                

Om Mani Padme Hum

Om Mani Padme Hum is a Buddhist mantra, which means something like “the jewel in the lotus.” This mantra is commonly used for healing the heart.                

Rama

Rama is one of the most popular mantras in India. Ghandi used this mantra. You can simply repeat Rama, or variations of the Rama mantra such as: “Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.”

Remember that there are many mantras depending on the school of meditation, and even prayer and positive affirmation can become powerful mantras.
